the circle: Networks of excellence? New FP6 instruments as a
Challenge for the Research Community

Abstract:
Based on the experience gained as coordinator of
the Network of Excellence CONNEX dedicated to the topic of efficient and
democratic multilevel governance in Europe, this paper will first introduce how
networks of excellence concretely work.
It will also describe the difficulties faced in building international and
multidisciplinary networks that really meet the objective of excellence and of
integration.
Last but not least, besides discussing the gains and advantages for scholars of
participatingin such broad networks, it will also reflect on the inconsistencies
and pitfalls of this kind of collaborative research and draw conclusions on the
continuation of this instrument under FP7, especially with regard to the
necessary reduction of bureaucracy and coordination costs.
