The Three-Month Course

The University offers a one-term course of complementary professional training in administrative sciences which lasts three months (May 1 to July 31, or November 1 to January 31). This course, which is open to all the students who may be interested in a future career in public administration, aims at broadening the participants' knowledge in accordance with the findings of recent research in administration. In addition, the students acquire administrative skills and can practise them under realistic conditions. Towards this end, there are more than 100 lectures, seminars, etc. each term covering a wide range of subjects.

The programme consists of three parts:

Introductory lectures
It is an introduction to specific areas of the administrative sciences
In the introduction section, lectures and seminars provide a general insight into the fields of law, administrative sciences, economics and sociology.

Core areas
The core sections deal with
  • Public tasks, organization and proceedings

  • Public management

  • European and international Affairs

  • State and Economy

  • Selected Policy and Legal Areas, e.g. Technology & Environment, Social and Labour Issues, Judiciary and Home Affairs

  • Legal counselling and designing of law, norms & contracts

  • Higher Education and Research Management

The extension section
In the extension section, language and rhetoric courses are offered, together with seminars on conference and negotiating techniques and public relations.

Students who take the one-term course may choose their areas of study according to their own individual interests. As the student body is made up of postgraduate students only, the structure and contents of the lectures and seminars can be organized accordingly. By teaching in small groups, the University tries to encourage its students to actively participate in lectures, seminars, study groups, colloquia and practical classes.
The one-term course does not lead to an examination; thus, no degrees are awarded at the end. In order to be considered to have completed the course successfully, the student must have attended at least twenty hours of classes per week and must have obtained certificates for his/her successful participation in both one study group in administrative sciences and in one seminar.

In this connection we refer you to the Studienführer (General Guide for Studies, in German language)
